The package took 10 minutes to open — one of those ridiculous packages within a box. It did not come with the batteries. Spent 30 minutes finding a tiny Philip head screwdriver. Searched for batteries, another 30 minutes. Attempted to follow instructions to place 4 AAA batteries in the compartment. Battery compartment wouldn’t open. What should have been user friendly and fun turned in to an infuriating hour and a half– I could have spent the time playing online Scrabble instead. Returning this product. As some other reviewers have noted, it is really a big unit. Don’t plan on taking this on any trips if you can get the batteries into the unit.

I purchased this item from the great reviews I had read about it. It is for a grandsons birthday later this month so I can’t comment on how it actually works. But the price was great and shipping super quick.

In the first 10 minutes of using this product, I typed in the word “HUSBAND” and it said it was a verb; and only gave one definition: to spend wisely. I typed in “CELLPHONE” and there was no definition. I typed in “TELEPHONE” and there was no definition. I typed in “MARGARINE” and it told me it was spelled “MARGARIN”… Okay, so some of these are nine-letter words, but give me a break! I called Franklin, the manufacturer, and they said that “margarine” was obviously a mistake and had not yet been reported to them. They even agreed with me that it cannot be trusted to accurately be used for Scrabble and that I should return it for a refund, and if the store wouldn’t give me my money back that they would.

The Franklin SCR-228 Scrabble Dictionary replaces the SCR-226 (which I still use). The new SCR-228 was a gift for a competitor with whom I’ve been playing over the interweb. The SCR-228 has the newly approved words sanctioned by the Scrabble big-boys and is a good addition to any book-type dictionaries that you may be using.

The anagramming function and the ‘games’ included afford practice and learning sessions that will improve your chances of winning.

Try it; you’ll like it. And they use very little battery power.

I returned this item the same day it arrived. The dot matrix graphics display were unreadble. It was a total waste of my time. The high cost was rediculous for such a poor product. Frustration from the start.
